Although crop production depends to some extent on the season, Chinese farmers cannot afford to lose even part of their harvest, no matter how harsh the weather. During the hot summer months, cabbage becomes withered and inedible. To make their cabbage look fresh during the hottest months of the year, farmers spray the crop with a formalin solution.
While the solution makes the plants look fresh, it is incredibly harmful to the body. The formalin is a solution of formaldehyde and other chemicals used as a disinfectant. When ingested, it can cause serious health problems.
