As with other seafood from China, imported shrimp should not be at the top of your shopping list. A few years ago, the food laboratory of the Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University examined various bags of shrimp bought in different shops in the USA. At the end of their study they reported that each sample was contaminated with enrofloxacin, chloramphenicol and the carcinogen nitrofurazone.
Each of these substances is available in antibiotics that are illegal in the USA. Due to the conditions in China, shrimp are exposed to all these substances. As a result, everyone who buys the shrimp is exposed to these substances.
