More and more jobs are taking place in an office, so it is no surprise that the vast majority of Americans spend their day glued to a desk chair. “Many Americans spend 80 percent or more of their day sitting,” says Kaliq Chang, MD, a pain specialist.

At some point in your life you have probably heard that it is bad to spend too many hours sitting down. But that is because it can have really devastating effects on your body. The Mayo Clinic reports that those who spend most of their lives sitting down have an increased risk of death, comparable to the risks of being overweight and smoking. Experts suggest taking a break from sitting every 30 minutes or getting a high desk for work.

Although it is best to take frequent breaks from your chair, there are also ways to correct your posture to reduce pain.
